HABC Community Activities and Initiatives

Empowerment Conference

The conference celebrates participants who successfully achieve self-sufficiency and provides resources and information to participants of HABC activities and programs.

Resident Council Trainings

The quarterly training sessions for resident councils are based on Robert’s Rules of Order, parliamentary procedures, effective leadership, and team building.

Poster Contest

HABC sponsors semi-annual poster contests. Youth are provided poster board, paint, and chalk to create posters promoting the themes of playground safety and fire prevention. Awards are given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. Each participant receives a certificate of participation.

Scholarship Information

Case management staff identifies scholarship opportunities for public housing residents who are high school seniors, first-time college students or non-traditional students, and wish to continue their education. Case managers also recruit children ages of four to 18 who are actively enrolled in school and have perfect attendance.

Money Smart Classes

Case management staff, in partnership with financial organizations trained in FDIC curriculum, offer quarterly Money Smart classes at our public housing communities. Topics include: borrowing basics, pay yourself first, banking services, budgeting, repairing your credit and homeownership.

Back To School Drives

FSS case managers organize back-to-school drives to help residents with costs of school supplies. The funds raised pay for school supplies, uniforms, immunizations and haircuts.

Health Fairs

Case managers participate in and support community health fairs.

Employment Fairs

Family self-sufficiency provides residents information on upcoming job fairs and assists with transportation, resume preparation, interview technique and necessary job skills.

Summer Youth Employment

HABC provides youth, ages 14 to 24, the opportunity to learn on-the-job training during summer months. Employment may be with HABC or with one of our partners.

Thanksgiving Baskets / Elf Louise

During the holiday season, case and property management staff identify needy families and supply holiday meals to them. HABC receives over 100 Elf Louise applications during the holiday season to bring a brighter, happier season to children residing at HABC properties.
