In May of 1994, the HABC applied for and was awarded funding under the Public Housing Program from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for the acquisition of 30 single-family dwellings located throughout the County of Bexar. HABC has maintained and operated these public housing units since then.
Due to distance between the homes and lack of uniformity of systems, the cost of maintaining and operating these units has become prohibitive. It was determined that the residents are better served through the Housing Choice Voucher Program, in order to provide them more choice in terms of schools for their children, proximity to work place, etc. Because of this, HUD has granted permission to HABC for disposition of all 30 Public Housing units. As a result, these houses will be put on the market to be sold in the coming months.
HABC is currently offering assistance for relocation to all displaced Scattered Site tenants, and Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers to qualifying residents.
