In May of 1994, the HABC applied for and was awarded funding under the Public Housing Program from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for the acquisition of 30 single-family dwellings located throughout the County of Bexar. HABC had maintained and operated these public housing units since then.
Due to distance between the homes and lack of uniformity of systems, the cost of maintaining and operating these units had become prohibitive. It was determined that the residents were better served through the Housing Choice Voucher Program, in order to provide them more choice in terms of schools for their children, proximity to work place, etc. Because of this, HUD granted permission to HABC for disposition of all 30 Public Housing units. As a result, these houses were put on the market and sold, in some cases to the residents themselves.
